Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource dedicated to education, which examines women's role in the narratives of pop culture, is her brainchild. She also serves as the executive director. In addition, she works to expose the issues surrounding sexual harassment and attacks on women, others of minority groups in the online world, she is committed to breaking down stereotypes that are associated with popular culture. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in Political and Social Thinking in the field of social and political thought from York University, is a popular public speaker. She has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became fascinated by the issue of gender and rights for women at an early stage. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s with a dream to develop a series of web videos which would explore gender roles in video games. But, she was the victim of online harassment. This attack didn't stop her, rather it strengthened the determination of an activist for women in media. Her numerous contributions to the feminist field are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic, has been awarded many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency, an educational nonprofit that studies the ways women are depicted within the popular culture stories.
